More than a lack of focus

ADHD - such a deceptive name. It doesn’t quite capture the scope of what this neurodevelopmental disorder really is, or what it’s like to live with.

ADHD is about so much more than struggling to focus or to sit still. A better name might be “Executive Functioning Dysregulation”.

Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit

Executive functioning — how you plan, organize, and manage tasks and emotions — are the skills we rely on to get through most modern tasks. ADHD impacts our executive functioning skills, making it harder to communicate, prioritize, follow through, and stay emotionally connected with those around us.

Living with ADHD impacts not only your relationships with others, but your relationship with yourself. It’s important to know these struggles aren’t about a lack of care or effort.

Many people living with ADHD are incredibly hard on themselves and constantly striving to improve. With the right support, you can find ways to manage these symptoms, build better relationships, find self-acceptance, and rebuild your confidence.

  • Step 1:

If you’re connected to a Primary Care Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Family Doctor) and they have training/expertise in ADHD, they may be comfortable providing you with an assessment and diagnosis.

    Step 2:

If it’s not within your Primary Care Provider’s expertise to assess and diagnose, you can request a referral for a Psychiatric or Psychological Assessment. In Alberta, you may also request a Clinical Social Worker Assessment. If you don’t have a Primary Care Provider, some walk-in clinics will make these referrals.

In Alberta and Ontario these services are free of charge when a Primary Care Provider makes a referral on your behalf.

*Note, there will likely be a waitlist for these services

    Step 3:

If your Primary Care Provider is not able to make a referral for a formal assessment, you may consider accessing private services. There will be a fee for these services. Some insurance and benefits packages will provide all or some of the funding for these assessments, others will not. Check with your insurance provider before scheduling your assessment.
